"Did you accidentally build a database?" O'Reilly Strata Hadoop 2016

Cockroach Labs Co-Founder and CEO Spencer Kimball speaks about the process of trying to solve a problem and ending up needing to build a database. This talk took place at O'Reilly Strata Hadoop World 2016 in San Jose, CA. This is not a talk about building a database without really knowing what you're doing. It's about setting out to solve a problem and then running into hurdles because existing database options do not allow for you to solve the problem efficiently. This happens often. And when it happens people often end up hacking together a database (though not very well). This was the original impetus for CockroachDB. Spencer was building a photo-sharing app (not Instagram, unfortunately) and he could not find a distributed SQL database that offered ACID guarantees. He ended up using DynamoDB for that project but it underwhelmed and from that experience, Spencer knew that there was a place in the database market for a distributed SQL database that was built for the cloud and prepared for the complexity of managing data in the future. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Careers: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/careers CockroachCloud: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/product/cockroachcloud/ Blog: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/blog/ Docs: https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/stable/ Community Slack: https://cockroa.ch/Welcome-to-Slack Twitter: https://twitter.com/CockroachDB
